Solomon Kane Thumbnails About The Artist
artwork by Solomon Kane "Symbolically Serious"
1998 ©
mixed media on illustration board
20" X 15"
$675

This painting was started in the same month that my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The red blood shape represents the cancer or tumors and the all Seeing Eye of God is presented flower like just above the black phoenix. If you angled the painting, you would see stars within the eye, the background universe, and the eyes of the cat. Flowers and stars are symbiotic for me, a concept contained within the Kabbalah. The creature that is part car/machine, and part amphibian, represents the concept of evil, and is a subconscious tribute to Bosch and his style of blending different creatures to make up his demons . The rooster, clouds, and lightening, represent the eternal or God, and these along with the bad things are portrayed in a whimsical and colorful style, showing that the most serious things in life must be considered in the scope of eternity, not the momentary. The cat in the upper right hand corner is an Egyptian Sphinx cat, a mysterious and religiously significant symbol from the time of the pharaohs. Even though the subject matter is quite serious, the scene is played out with bright colors and an unfathomable hope.
